University professor of languages and literatures, and translator of works by Portuguese authors such as Eça de Queirós, António Nobre, Fernando Pessoa, Urbano Tavares Rodrigues, Maria Judite de Carvalho, Vergílio Ferreira, Nuno Júdice, Mário de Carvalho, Lídia Jorge, and Gonçalo M. Tavares.

Marie-Hélène Piwnic taught Portuguese at the Universities of Bordeaux and Paris-Sorbonne. A member of the Société des Hispanistes Français, she served as its Vice-President (1990–1993).

She was decorated as Comendador da Ordem do Mérito (Portugal, 1992) and Knight of the Order of Academic Palms (France, 1994).
