Profile
With a degree in Medicine, he trained in Radiology in Coimbra, Lisbon and Rome (each for more than a year), supplemented by short internships in Spain, Belgium and Germany. In his academic career, he obtained his doctorate, and habilitation, became a full professor and chaired the Pedagogical and Scientific Councils of the Faculty of Medicine of Coimbra, as well as its Assembly of Representatives. Also at his faculty, he was a member of the committee that reformed the curriculum of the degree in Medicine and participated in the creation of the new degree in Dentistry. In the planning of the new University Hospital of Coimbra, he led the adoption of innovative architectural planning. He has also been involved in the definition of radiological equipment for other public health units in Lisbon and the northern region.
At the Portuguese Medical Association, he was coordinator of the National Ethics and Deontology Council and, as President of the College of Radiology, he promoted the adoption of a new national training plan for this specialty. He was particularly interested in gastrointestinal and bone radiology. He introduced double contrast gastric studies in Portugal and, together with Diniz de Freitas, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. He perfected the technique of microradiography of non-decalcified bone, which allowed him to carry out pioneering studies using historadiography, particularly on bone callus and the effect of electromagnetic radiation on bone growth.
He was also interested in bioethics and co-founded the first Bioethics Study Center in Portugal. He published in this field and participated in the doctoral studies of bioethicists at the UCP.
